Conductors


Tedd Gullickson, Principal Conductor

Tedd joined the band in 2010.  Originally from Moorhead, Minnesota, Tedd earned a BA from Concordia College and an MA from the University of Minnesota, both degrees in Music Education.  He performed with the Walt Disney World All American Marching Band during the summers.  After teaching music in Canby and Worthington, Tedd served for 25 years as Director of Bands at Mankato West High School where he also directed the 77 Lancers Marching Band.  The West Bands performed three times at the State Music Convention under his direction.   He has received the Minnesota Music Teacher of the Year, Mankato Healthy Youth award, Embers Education Award and the Governor's Service Award for Excellence.  Tedd served in leadership roles for the Minnesota Music Educators Association, Minnesota State High School League and the Minnesota Band Directors Association.  Having performed with various groups, Tedd is currently general manager and drummer in the Real Big Band and often serves as an adjudicator and clinician.  His main influences were Rikard K. Hansen, Russell Pesola, J. Robert Hanson and Frank Bencriscutto.   He and his wife Lori live in Burnsville.

Adrian Leyva, Associate Conductor

Adrian joined the band in 2019 after moving to the Twin Cities. Originally from Houston, Texas, he received much of his training from Baylor University and the University of Houston where he focused on music pedagogy, instrumental conducting, and saxophone performance. While in Houston, Adrian was a soloist with the Houston Pride Band, the Houston Civic Symphony, and was a member of Saxworks saxophone quartet. Adrian also volunteered with the Houston Pride Band where he served as a board member At-Large and Vice-President.

His musical experience as a saxophonist ranges from classical, jazz, and contemporary/avant-garde and as a conductor he is influenced by Frederick Fennell, Leonard Bernstein, and Gustavo Dudamel. His favorite composers are Bill Ryan, Phillip Glass, John Adams, and Gustav Mahler.  In his day job, Adrian is a technical support associate and also serves as an assistant conductor with the Minnesota State Band.
