Another great rehearsal last Tuesday everyone! We are in for a wonderful concert. It’s never too early to start advertising. Tell your ‘framily’ that Jefferson will be the place to be on Oct 21!


We only have 2 regular rehearsals left, plus the dress rehearsal before the big concert. The last practices will be critical of course, and as always any practice time you can find will pay off come performance time.

8:15 Parade of the Tall Ships

9:00 fine’ and tear down


I really appreciate your help on the set up and tear down crews. It’s cool to see everyone working together and mixing.

Work on the quasi mixed meter note groupings.

The fugue section needs attention – esp m 67-71.

We need to focus on m 157 to the end. There is a ton going on here.

I am really impressed how well the CICB is playing this challenging and little played masterpiece!

This piece really ‘fits’ the band.

We really need to work on cleaning this up – it will make a great closer. We are aiming for m=160 from O to the end!

Great job with this piece so far. There are a lot of tricky transitions, but they are smoothing out well.


A reminder of some logistics. First, we are doing two cuts.

1. Cut the first ending after rehearsal 5.

2. Cut from the reh. 20 to 3 bars before reh. 21. The first beat at reh. 20 connects to the second beat of 3 bars before reh. 21. I will repeat this at our next rehearsal.


In addition, there are four solo sections.

1. Alto sax solo from 3 bars after reh. 2 until reh. 3 (all other sections are unaffected).

2. Down to one on a part from the andantino after reh. 4 until 3 bars after the second ending.

3. Down to one on a part from 3 bars before reh. 7 until the allegro.

4. With the exception of trombone 1, down to one on a part from reh. 17 until reh. 18. All first trombones play.


These changes in tempo/character are results, not events. I set them up several bars in advance, so if you look up several bars ahead, the transition will be much easier to anticipate. Please don't wait until the measure before to look up.


Several sections are dragging due to the off-beat players. Take your cue from the downbeat (keep in touch with me and listen for the low brass/percussion).


Muted trumpets can play louder.


The next step is to be aware of tone quality and balance. If you can't hear the melody, you are probably playing too loudly.


I'm probably in the minority, having not seen South Pacific before. But since this version is not available on Youtube, if you want an idea of how this music is supposed to sound, listen to the soundtrack.



What a fun march. Your pacing of dynamics has gotten much better since last time. Bravi a tutti!


Keep up the tempo at 22, 39, and 87. I know it's a lot of notes in a short time frame. When in doubt, meet up with me on the downbeats.


At 71 and 119, please keep your eyes up for your entrances. If you listen only, you will be late.


Great job on the rallentando at 131. Remember the subito piano too!
